2017 was another great year for horse racing, especially for Mechanicville native and thoroughbred trainer Chad Brown. After leading the nation this past year in total purse money with $26,202,164, Brown was recognized for his achievements at the 2017 Eclipse Awards by being named the Most Outstanding Trainer.
Trainer Chad Brown’s Achievements
The 47th Annual Eclipse Awards were held at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, Florida on January 25th, 2018. Established in 1971, these awards are presented annually to the most deserving thoroughbred horses and individuals based on their achievements in the sport.
During the 2017 awards ceremony, Chad Brown was announced as the Most Outstanding Trainer for the second consecutive year. According to a report by the Times Union, Brown was the clear winner in the category, having received 215 out of a possible 250 votes.
Born in Mechanicville near Saratoga Springs, Brown has been one of the country’s most successful trainers in recent years. He finished 2017 with 213 wins (47 graded stakes wins), 162 seconds, and 128 thirds.
Recognition of Saratoga Thoroughbreds
For Saratoga Race Course fans, some of the other highlights of the awards ceremony included recognition of thoroughbreds that competed at Saratoga during the year:
- Gun Runner, who competed at the Whitney and Woodward, was named the Horse of the Year
- West Coast, the winner of the Travers, was named the Most Outstanding 3-Year-Old Male
- Abel Tasman, the winner of the Coaching Club American Oaks, was named the Most Outstanding 3-Year Old Filly
- Forever Unbridled, the winner of the Personal Ensign, was named the Most Outstanding Older Dirt Female
- World Approval, winner of the Fourstardave Handicap, was named the Most Outstanding Male Turf House
